Track Rascals (6-8 years old)

The Track Rascals program introduces young persons in a friendly and non-competitive manner to the basic movements of all sports i.e. running, jumping and throwing. It is particularly important for 6 to 8 year olds to do this if they wish to pursue a sport of any type when they get older as this is the age range in which large body movements and coordination are being developed in the human body.

Youth Program (9-19 years old)

The Cowichan Track and Field Youth Program includes training for athletes in the Junior Development and Senior age groups for those ages 9-19. This program will include the following components:

  • Track training nights twice per week from late March to late June.

  • Track & Field specific skills development

  • Opportunity to participate in multiple track meets throughout Vancouver Island

  • Compete in alignment with the LONG TERM ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT  (LTAD) pathway.

There is also pre-season training from February-March for athletes who want to focus on running (Tues and Thurs 4:30-5:30 pm). This is included when you register for the full year.

BC has a highly developed program for athletes of these ages designed to train and develop young athletes in the sport of athletics. The distances run on the track, the heights and placement of hurdles and the weight of the throwing implements are appropriate for each age group. Full details may be obtained from the BC Athletics website.

  • Sprints

  • Distance

  • Hurdles

  • Relays

There are many track meets and cross country runs held around the province during the course of the year, including the BCJD Track and Field Championships and the BC Open Cross Country Championships.

In Zone 6 (Vancouver Island and Powell River), the various clubs are members of the Vancouver Island Athletics Association (VIAA) which organizes meets and training sessions for athletes in the Zone.

Masters (35+)

New for 2024, Cowichan Valley Track and Field will introduce a program for Masters athletes. Masters athletes are those athletes who are 35 years and older.

This group will train with our Senior Athletes and be provided with coaching in sprints, distance running, throws and jumps. Many of our Masters Athletes will also provide coaching to our Track Rascal and JD programs as well as volunteer with the club at track meets to support our younger athletes.
